Answer: There are various reasons why primer would be needed on a interior painting project. Primarily, primer is designed to seal up porous surfaces to make it ready for paint. Primers come in all different flavors though – some are specially designed for blocking out stains, some are fast or slow drying, others go on heavy to fill in cracks or crevices. Anytime you have bad stains, bare drywall or wood, we’ll need to use a primer.
Answer: It depends on the project, but generally, we recommend two coats. First, you want enough coverage to even out the wall surfaces where damage, repairs and imperfections cannot be completely concealed. Second, two coats will provide you with a more scrub-resistant, long lasting finish.
Answer: Typically we complete each room in 1-2 days but it will depends on the size of project, time of year, weather, schedule, etc. Once we discuss your project with you in more detail, an accurate answer will be provided. It takes about a day or two to paint the walls, ceiling and trim in a typical bedroom. You should plan on not having access to the bedroom for one night.
Answer: Interior paints typically need a minimum of 50 degrees with a humidity around the same. The more humidity or the colder it is, the slower the drying time of the paint.
Answer: We typically use low odor water based acrylic coatings for our interior work, but we also work with seniors and others that might have allergies or are more sensitive to paint smells by using zero VOC products.
Answer: Yes, we understand that surfaces painted with calcamine paints can be chalky. We deal with this issue by using household cleaner to remove as much chalk as we can, followed by rinsing. Our painting professionals then apply a primer specially formulated for chalky surfaces. Two coats of paint then complete the job.
Answer: We recommend 24 hours to dry before showering and please use a fan or a window open for air to circulate. Hot temperatures with no fan used can lead to paint bubbling if not given the proper time to cure.
Answer: We try to keep the disturbance to a minimum. However, you can expect some disruptions as it relates to furniture being moved temporarily, drop cloths, and plastic/tape hanging. But the most important way it will affect your life, hopefully, is in the dramatic change that’ll take place and the pride that’ll come from your newly designed/remodeled space for you to enjoy!
Answer: For interior painting, we will generally need to know what your choices are the day we start. For exterior painting, if we have a lot of prep work then you can decide even slightly after we get started. For interior painting, when we are doing prep work, we can put some sample colors on the wall for you to see how they look in real life as well.
Answer: Most homeowners look to refresh their rooms with a new coat of paint or switch things up color-wise about every 7-10 years. The higher traffic areas that are more lived in, like bathrooms, kitchens, hallways, and living rooms tend to be painted more frequently.
Answer: While you don’t need to be home during the process, it is helpful for someone to be there when we get things started, and of course it’s required for someone to be there when we’re done. That final walk-through and making sure we’ve exceeded your expectations.
Answer: Not at all. We have years of experience repairing drywall damage and will include it in our bid. We’re particular about making drywall repairs and imperfections as concealed as possible and would prefer to paint over our own drywall work versus someone else’s. Plus, you only have to deal with one company for your painting project.
Answer: Yes, for your convenience, we have the ability to do drywall repair and texturing as well. Yes, we also scrape popcorn ceilings. Then we can apply spray texture or hand texture.
Answer: We want each job to come out the best that it can and we always recommend properly preparing the walls before applying the finish paint. Our professionals know how to bring out the best from your walls no matter what they’ve been through.
Answer: Our interior painting service includes professional preparation of all surfaces to be painted. This is to include drywall repairs textured to match surrounding substrate. Sanding and cleaning surfaces such as wood to achieve best adhesion. We also are very meticulous about covering areas and surfaces NOT to be painted. Answer: Yes, we can fix water damage and will fill holes. Any other repairs will be completed as part of our preparation. The time it takes to repair is in proportion to the amount of damage.
Answer: Our experience tells us that, for the most part, paint simply doesn’t touch up that well if it’s been more than 6 months or so. Our suggestion is to paint corner-to-corner on the wall that needs to be touched up. This saves you from having to paint the entire room while the results will still look nice.
Answer: All we ask is that you remove valuables and breakable items and take down wall hangings. You can leave the heavy lifting to us.
Answer: To prepare for interior painting we ask that you remove any small items from the tops of shelves, nick-knacks, pictures from the wall, window treatments as well as any valuables. We will move any larger items like couches and chairs toward the center of the room. We will place plastic and sheets over any items left in the center of the room for extra protection.
Answer: Before any painting happens we will move the furniture into the middle of the room. It will then be covered in clean plastic to protect it from any paint. Finally, the entire work floor area is covered in a canvas drop cloth to prevent any spillage onto the floor or carpeting.
Answer: We will remove wallpaper prior to painting. Before we remove the paper we will test an area to see how the paper was applied. If the wallpaper was not applied properly it may lead to damage to the walls when the paper is removed. Your crew leader will discuss with you other options if this is the case.
Answer: All cabinets should be emptied out.
Answer: Typically the sheen of paint on the ceiling is a flat paint. This reduces and glare from a shinier coating.
Answer: The most common wall coating is eggshell paint. This wipes and cleans easily and has a small amount of angular sheen. Some customers choose a matte finish which is almost flat. Other choose a satin finish which is even easier to clean due to its higher sheen however, it can show defects in the wall when viewed at a wider angle.
Answer: The most common woodwork coating sheen is semi-gloss paint. Semi-gloss has the easiest ability to be wiped or washed which can happen frequently on commonly used items such as doors. If semi-gloss is too shiny for you then we suggest satin sheen or pearl sheen which is just as good but less shiny.
Answer: Paint finish comes in three general categories:
Flat Finish – also known as matte finish
Satin Finish – also known as eggshell finish or low-luster finish
Gloss Finish – also known as semi-gloss finish Read where the best places to use these types of finishes are in your home.
Answer: Primarily, the differences are in how shiny the paint is. Flat paints have almost no shine at all. These are typically used on ceilings and in areas where you’d want to hide previous imperfections. Eggshell and satin finishes are very similar and are the most common for walls. This wall finish has a little bit of shine, more than a flat, but not as much as a semi-gloss. This provides a good balance between washability/dirt resistance and hiding wall imperfections. Semi-gloss and full gloss sheens tend to be used for trim work around windows and doors or kitchen cabinets. It’s exactly as it sounds – glossy. And is therefore very washable and dirt resistant; but because it’s so shiny, it reflects more light, showing off that surface.
